The Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework (EYFS) outlines the standards that nurseries, schools, and other childcare providers must meet for the learning, development and care of children from 0 to 5 years old. It also includes the requirements for paediatric first aid to ensure the safety and health of children and babies in your care.

Who Does It Apply to?
All schools and early years providers must follow the framework including childminders, preschools, nurseries, and school reception classes. This also includes OFSTED-registered providers, however OFSTED themselves do not have any legal requirements when it comes to first aid.
Who Needs to be Trained?
The training requirements as outlined in the EYFS Statutory Framework are as follows:
Early years providers:
At least one person who has a full current paediatric first aid (12-hour) certificate must be on the premises and available at all times when children are present, including making sure a first aider is accompanying children on outings.
Childminders (including those who work alone with children):
Must hold a full current paediatric first aid (12-hour) certificate.
Other requirements:
Training must be renewed every three years.
Paediatric first aid certificate within three months of starting work is included in the required staff to child EYFS ratio.
Information on who holds what first aid certificate in the workplace must be available or on display for parents to request and view.
What Requirements Are There For Schools?
If you are working with children under five, you are bound by the requirements of the EYFS Statutory Framework as well as The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. If you work with children over five your requirements are set out in the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.
